The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is set to rebrand myGovID as myID starting in mid-November, approximately one year after securing funding for the change.
On Friday, the ATO confirmed the schedule for updating the digital identity app’s name. The rebranding effort follows the allocation of $11.5 million in funding during the mid-year economic and fiscal outlook (MYEFO) announcement at the end of 2023.
The new name and logo were first revealed in March when the ATO applied for a trademark for myID. According to the ATO, the renaming is intended to eliminate confusion between the myGovID app and the myGov platform, a change recommended by an audit of myGov users.
The audit suggested that the government explore the possibility of merging myGov and myGovID into a single mobile app to clarify the distinction between the two services. However, recognizing the potential costs of such a merger, the ATO proposed rebranding myGovID to position it as a separate government service distinct from myGov.
Additionally, the government noted that the rebranding also signifies future expansions in how digital IDs can be used, both for government services and eventually for private sector applications, aligning with public understanding of digital identification.
As part of a broader initiative, the government aims to enhance the myGov platform, which it views as underused. The myGovID rebranding will be implemented through updates in various app stores in November.
Current users will not need to create a new account under myID, the ATO confirmed.
