If you are born in the UK, you do not always gain British citizenship by birth. Your circumstance and your parents’ circumstances matter the most.

Gaining citizenship by descent simply means that you obtain British citizenship status based on your parents’ or grandparents’ circumstances or status.

If you achieve British citizenship you may not be able to pass the citizenship to your children if they were born outside the UK. However, you will be able to enjoy a life without immigration or UK border restrictions.

Gaining citizenship by descent

British citizenship by descent can be achieved when at the time of your birth, one of your parents was a British citizen.

  • If your parent was born or adopted in the United Kingdom, earned citizenship after making their own application, or worked as a Royal servant somewhere at time of your birth, they can immediately pass on their citizenship to you. If your British parent earned citizenship by descent, you will not be eligible for automatic citizenship.
  • If you were born outside the United Kingdom on or after July 1, 2006, you will automatically become a British citizen by descent if one of your parents was a UK citizen by descent at the time when you were born.
  • If you were born outside of the United Kingdom between 1983 & June 2006, you are an automatic resident by ancestry if your mother or father was a British citizen other than by descent at the time of your birth; however, if your father has Citizenship but your mother does not, they must have been married at that time.
  • If you were born outside the United Kingdom before 1983, you will only be a citizen by descent if your father was a British citizen and married to your mother.
  • If you were born before 1948, you can acquire British citizenship by descent, if you or any of your parents were not living in a commonwealth country. Or any of your parents are not born in British owned territories. Or, any of your grandparents got married before 1949
